"The earthquake woke me up and I heard a tremendous noise of falling rocks"

VICENTE PEREZ | EL PINAR

The largest earthquake in El Hierro since July has reactivated the magma, with 4.6 degrees and intensity between IV and V has caused landslides in El Golfo,, some on the road from the summit, which have already been removed, and other on the cliff known as El Risco, the mighty natural rampart located at the exit of the tunnel in Los Roquille, which in any case is closed for this seismic activity, although there is no evidence that the fallen stones have come to the road.

"I was asleep already at that time, about 12.20, but the shock was tremendous, and I woke up, it moved all the furniture and shook the windows, and then I heard from the cliff falling rocks, making a tremendous noise." It is the testimony of Eugenie, a resident of Los Mocanes in Frontera, who could not specify the exact point of falling rocks, because the incident occurred before dawn.

Both the Cabildo de El Hierro and Frontera City Council have confirmed that the landslides on the road to the summit were minor and were removed at dawn, shortly after the earthquake occurred.

The quake was felt throughout the island, but especially in Frontera and El Pinar, where even people who were standing on solid ground could see how the ground moved with unusual strength for one or two seconds long, enough to cause panic in some people.

Also felt in the island capital, Valverde, even in areas where until now had not seen many earthquakes, as in Tamaduste.

The earthquake was felt last night by special envoys Diario De avisios in El Pinar, that on the morning of Friday have received several very soft ground movements on the second floor of a house.

Scientists continue with maximum attention to the earthquakes in El Golfo, near the coast, and hypothesize a possible eruption underwater preferably in an area where depths are very large even at very short distance from the coast. Just today the research vessel surveys Ramon Margalef make its way to this part of the island to see what happens in these abyssal sea floor.
