The Sarmiento de Gamboa research vessel begins a campaign of research in El Hierro, under the Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk (PEVOLCA), consisting of the geophysical survey of the seabed, both north of El Golfo, and in the area submarine eruption near the south of La Restinga.
This vessel, involving the Geological Survey, Marine Technology Unit of the CSIC, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography and the Navy Hydrographic Institute, measurements of gravity, seismic profiles (refraction and reflection) and bathymetry.
The Sarmiento de Gamboa will be in El Hierro for two days, before starting a research campaign on the continental shelf of the islands.
Evolution of eruptive phenomenon
The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has confirmed on their part to PEVOLCA during yesterday 23 earthquakes were located, none of them felt by the population, which stood mostly at depths between 15-24 km at sea, in the area of El Golfo. The maximum magnitude of 2.9 has been registered on the Richter scale.
The amplitude of the tremor signal showed several periods of sharp decrease of the amplitude for a few minutes between 1:00 and 4:00 am and between 20:30 and 22:00. The rest of the day has remained stable, stopping the slight upward trend observed during the previous day. It is confirmed that the analysis of the data is not evidence of a second source of tremor.
As for the deformation in the horizontal components remains stable trend of the previous days. With respect to the vertical components, the GPS stations continue to show a trend of deflation, including stations located east of El Golfo, the stations west of El Golfo seem to point to a stability in this component.
After the appearance of fragments of lava during the day on Sunday, none was observed yesterday but a large brown colored spot. In an inspection Salvage emission over the area it was found abundant emission measured at pH 5.71 in water. In the night flight was a SASEMAR temperature of 20.3 º C in the area and not much activity was detected compared to previous days.
