CO2 emissions in El Hierro are seven times higher than normal

The diffuse emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the Submarine Volcanoin the Sea of Calms continues to increase and reached a value seven times the normal average of issuance, according to data compiled by the Institute of the Canary Islands volcanological.

According to these data, the diffuse emission of CO2 by the volcano island has now reached the 2398 ± 115 tons a day when normal values are 345 tons per day.

Scientists at the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER), an agency of the Cabildo of Tenerife and is part of Involcan, have been made since the crisis began on seismic and volcanic island on numerous scientific surveys of volcanic gases diffuse emissions that have materialized over the entire surface of the island.
To date, according to a note of Involcan, the results reflect the record of an upward trend of the diffuse emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere by the volcano island of El Hierro.

Scientists explained in the note that this increase in the diffuse emission of carbon dioxide reflects the pressure of this component in magmatic-hydrothermal system existing in the island of El increases due to the movement of magma from deep positions to shallower favoring exsolution of carbon dioxide dissolved in the magma.

Diffuse emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere contribute to the analysis of the evolution of the volcanic eruption being recorded on the island as the gases are the driving force of volcanic eruptions.

Carbon dioxide is the second major component of volcanic gases after water vapor and its low solubility in molten silicitados (magma) favors this gas to escape with their ease of volcanic systems in depth.
These scientific surveys conducted by Involcan have been possible thanks to MAKAVOL project "Capacity Building of R + D + i + d to contribute to the reduction of volcanic risk in the Macaronesia", funded by the European Union, with the collaboration of the cabildo of Tenerife and El Hierro.
