70% of the coast of El Hierro is affected by gas and mineral stain left by the volcano during the month which has already been spewing lava and gases to the seafloor. Only 30% is safe from this pollution, and of that portion where in theory there are still fish catches that would be possible.

The data was provided by this Sunday the Patron of the fishermen of La Restinga, Fernando Gutierrez, who advanced the objective of this group is to prohibit fishing in the entire island, including that one third of the coast, to ensure that the faster recovery.

To do this, these sailors have started the regional deputy chairman and PP, José Manuel Soria, the commitment to bring in the regional parliament's request for a biological strike around the perimeter of El Hierro, which will last at least six months but could exceed the year in the light of developments still ongoing volcanic phenomena and the severity and extent of the damage, something to be determined by biologists. Soria met on Friday in El Pinar with a hundred people from La Restinga, also by the PP regional deputy Manuel Fernandez.

The National Oceanographic Institute (IGN) has found that the volcano has created a suboxic zone (very low values of dissolved oxygen concentration) between 65 and 90 feet deep. This layer is preventing fish access to shallow depths to feed, where they then die from lack of oxygen, not water toxicity.

Gutierrez said the bleak landscape left by the volcano on marine life, "for the green spot has reached Frontera, beaches and of course the sea of calm, but still do not know to what extent each area is affected, although it is clear is that you can not fish in all the extension ".
The representative of 40 fishermen stressed that "all fish are affected".

Closely linked to Venezuela, said Gutierrez has been in contact with the Consulate of the country, as in El Hierro lies more than a thousand Venezuelans, in the event that some were affected by the volcano and require government financial support from Hugo Chavez.

The mariner of El Pinar, who is also spokesman of the management committee created by the residents of La Restinga, makes clear that their struggle is not focused only on behalf of the fishermen but also by all affected economic sectors. "At present the only direct financial support coming soon is the Canarian Government, and as the central government we will wait a few days but if it does not approve new aid, we do not rule protest action," said Gutierrez. In his view, aid approved by the State Administration Council of Ministers "are an insult to those affected, since no use to an employer take a credit if you have no billing ICO for the consequences of the eruption."

However, the Politeness is not courageous, and thanked the staff of the Civil Guard and the Army has sent thanks to the state executive to the island "as well as the work of the City of El Pinar and the Council of El Hierro.
